Ideal for relaxing in the garden, the swing is a seat suspended from a structure and in which you can swing gently while sitting or lying down. Different in shape, materials, and number of seats, you can choose the swing that suits you according to your desires and the space available.
Choose a swing according to its use and location
The swing must match the aesthetics of your garden or terrasse. Classically rectangular, it can also take an oval shape for more originality. In a rustic setting, a wooden model will blend perfectly into the environment, even if you will have to take into account its maintenance constraints. Prefer a resin or metal swing if you want a more contemporary atmosphere. And for a reduced budget, opt for a PVC swing, which must be protected during winter.
The available space will determine the size of the swing: from the individual model, which takes the form of a hanging chair, to the four-seater swing, including the two or three-seater version, sometimes with independent seats. Also check the maximum load of the swing, i.e. the weight it can support.
The comfort of the seat will be determined by the cushioning of the swing. So pay attention to the padding and the quality of the fabrics. Without neglecting the roof of the swing, which plays on its aesthetics, but must also protect you from the sun and possibly light rains.
The structure materials of the swing
The materials chosen will depend on the aesthetics of the swing, but also its longevity and its price.
Wooden swing
Inwood, the swing offers a natural and warm appearance. You will have the choice between swings in European wood (pine, oak, locust, larch, etc.), imperatively treated to resist humidity, and swings in exotic wood (teak, Autauga, eucalyptus, etc.) naturally rot-proof.
All these essences are classified on a scale of 1 to 5 according to their resistance to humidity, insects, or even fungi, from the worst to the best. They must be regularly maintained using a product suitable.
Note that the wooden swing is sufficient on its own, it is rarely provided with cushioning. This will not prevent you from adding one if you want to increase your comfort.
Steel swing
In steel, the swing is modernized. Whether its stainless steel or epoxy steel, it is resistant to corrosion and UV. However, be careful with its weight and its tendency to heat up in the sun, which makes cushioning essential.
It does not require special maintenance, but the slightest scratch can remove the protective layer provided by the epoxy resin and leave it defenseless against rust. To remedy this, some swings are treated by cataphoresis, a painting technique intended to increase their resistance.
Aluminum swing
In aluminum, the swing often offers a contemporary design. It is also particularly resistant to climatic constraints (rain, heat, frost, etc.) and to corrosion.
Solid, but light, the aluminum swing is more easily transportable and does not require any special maintenance. But just like steel models, it tends to heat up in the sun.
Woven resin swing
In woven resin, also called poly rattan or synthetic rattan, the swing has the advantages of a plastic material with the beauty of woven rattan. It is thus light, rot-proof, and weather-resistant.
It is easy to maintain with a little soapy water. However, check that it has been treated to resist UV rays, as it does not lose some of its beautiful colors over time.
PVC swing
Made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), the swing is less resistant and cannot stand the winter in the garden. But it is inexpensive and easy to maintain
