When do Daffodils Bloom - Tips & Care

The daffodils are a subspecies of Amaryllis with bright yellow flowers. The name of this herald of spring gives a clear indication of the usual flowering time of the popular garden and cut flowers.

So-called pre-bloomers in perennial beds

The yellow daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) is therefore known as the daffodil, as it is usually in full bloom around Easter and attracts a lot of attention in otherwise rather bare and colorless vegetation.

In the garden, the daffodil, with its flowering period from March to April, is often used as a pre-flowering plant in perennial beds.

However, the leaves should only be removed after flowering when they can be detached with a slight pull. This allows the plant to store enough nutrients in the perennial onion for the following year.

Bring spring into the house and garden with daffodils

Daffodils can add spring color in the following ways:

  • as perennial bulb plants in the garden
  • as potted plants on the window sill
  • as cut flowers in the vase

Planted specimens in pots can be planted out in the garden after they have faded indoors, as the bulbs are perennial and hardy.

Tips

When cutting off the flowers for a bouquet, you should be aware that wild stocks are protected by law and the juice of the poisonous daffodils can cause skin irritation.

I studied horticulture at the University of Guelph and in my free time I plant everything that has roots on a piece of land. The topic of self-sufficiency and seasonal nutrition is particularly close to my heart. Favorite fruit: quince, corner, and blueberry Favorite vegetables: peas, tomatoes, and garlic
